& Mothers
Need to Know
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your
doctor or pharmacist about taking over-the-
counter medications or prescription
medications
• Avoid smoking and second-hand cigarette
smoke. Cigarette smoke has been linked to
crib death (SIDS – Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome)
• Watch your caffeine intake. Six or more cups of
coffee or more than 600 milligrams of
caffeine can double the risk of miscarriage
• Avoid alcoholic
beverages if you are pregnant
• Remember, your breast milk will contain small
amounts of any drugs or alcohol you take and
can affect your baby’s health and growth
• Always put your baby to sleep on his or her
back on a firm bed without loose blankets or
sheets
• Breastfeeding increases your baby’s immunity
and keeps him or her healthy
